CentOS 5.6

Logged in to my home workstation and got the joyful news: updates are ready! From the number of packages (in the hundreds) I knew this was the long-awaited Update 6 for CentOS 5. There has been a lot of controversy on the mailing lists over this update, beginning with the project’s decision to do 5.6 before 6.0, a no brainer for those of us who are enterprise system admins who run these things in production. Then there was the time it took to complete the building and rigorous testing required to get even an incremental update out, something that didn’t bother me a bit. As always, I’m grateful to the project maintainers for all their hard work — and their wisdom in only releasing when ready.
