jEdit on el6

jEdit, the cross-platform Java based text editor, is out with version 5.0 as of 22 November of this year. Installing on RHEL or any of its clones is easy.

The download is here.

[root@test.example.com]# java -jar jedit5.0.0install.jar

Just follow the prompts. I accepted the default for paths (/usr/local/share/jEdit/5.0.0 for the app and /usr/local/bin for the link).

You’ll also need a .desktop file to provision an icon to the app menu. Here’s mine:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=jEdit
Comment=Java Text Editor
Exec=jedit
Icon=jedit.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Development
StartupNotify=true
