Looking for an alternative to Google for cloud services like calendars, contacts and file storage, I stumbled across ownCloud.org.
The software is open source but providers may charge fees for various levels of service. The company behind ownCloud is ownCloud, Inc., whose main business is selling support for both on premises and cloud based deployments of its software.
Sync clients are available for Windows, Linux, Android and those i-things.
I’ve just begun exploring the available interfaces but so far the ownCloud platform looks like a promising contender in the open source cloud movementt Its on premises solution may also be something that cloud-shy enterprises may want to take a good look at.
